Many people ask us to explain the pros and cons of Sterling Silver versus silver-plated beads. Similarly what would be the advantage of Gold-filled versus gold-plated beads and findings.
Sterling silver is made with 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% another alloy like copper; silver plate is made with .15 to .25 mils of sterling silver over a base metal, often brass. Sterling silver is a precious metal and is more expensive than silver-plated chain and findings. However, sterling silver is easier to polish, gives designs a higher value, will not chip and is less brittle, so it is often preferred for long-lasting jewelry designs.
Electroplating (metallurgy)
A process whereby a thin coat of metal is applied to a material. The process involves placing the material to be coated in a solution containing ions of the metal and then passing an electric current through the system, which causes the ions to adhere to the material. Zinc and copper are often used in conjunction with base metal beads, usually brass. Nickel plating is less often used for jewelry components, as this is known to cause skin reactions with some people.
The automobile industry has used chrome plating to enhance corrosion resistance on metal parts.
When cleaning plated beads, it is recommended that you use only a non-abrasive polishing agent, such as soft, effective Sunshine® Polishing Cloths, with their special non-scratch micro-abrasives, safely cleans jewelry, silver, gold, brass, copper, glass, mirrors, golf clubs, guitars, drum cymbals, bar items and most surfaces, leaving a deep long-lasting shine.
At the bench, in your store or in your customers’ homes, Sunshine Cloths are the perfect accessory to brighten everything! These are the same cloths used by professional jewelers, musicians, golf enthusiasts, Louise Vuitton collectors and Galleries carrying fine Native American and Fine Jewelry. We keep one in every guitar case!
Liquid jewelry dips or cleaners should never be used with plated metal beads and findings, as the chemicals found in jewelry dips is too caustic and can lead to chipping, peeling and discoloration. The beads will almost immediately show the effects when dipped in chemical solutions, by turning an unnatural brass color.
The jewelry creations you make using our beads and findings will last a long time with the proper care. When in doubt, ask before purchasing beading materials, in order to avoid costly mistakes later on down the road.
